ACC Background: I've been a member of the ACC since the early 1980's - at first with the Vancouver Section and from 1988 with the Calgary Section. I moved to Canmore in 2002 and since then I have been a member of both Calgary and Rocky Mountain Sections. I was Chair of the Ski Committee for a number of years and became Calgary Section Chair in 2004. I'm now on the Executive in the (not very demanding) role of Past Chair.
Courses: I have attended both the Summer and Winter North Face leadership courses, and over the years have done a number of avalanche and leadership courses. The most recent was Advanced Wilderness First Aid in the Spring of 2009.
Mountain Interests: My main interests are Ski Mountaineering, Summer Mountaineering and Scrambling. Sport climbing is not my thing, and winter ice climbing is too slow to keep warm!
Trips: Over the years I have led quite a lot of ACC trips. The majority of these were ski trips in the winter, but I've also led a number of mountaineering objectives in the summer. I would not lead a mountain trip that involved a high level of technical rock climbing.
Current Projects: In 2008 I cycled across Canada - a long-time dream of mine - and it was an amazing experience. I would like to do it again, but next time I would not go with a large group. By comparison 2009 is looking a bit tame at the moment!
Professional Life: I'm an actuary by profession, and although I haven't completely retired I don't do much work these days! Instead I spend a lot of time with my 4 grandchildren - all of whom live in Calgary.

Some personal tidbits:
My life in the mountains started when I was a kid, in Waterton Park, when my father was an active ACC member. My favourite area in the world for its beauty, bar none, is Lake O'Hara that I first visited in circa 1975. My favourite mountains, largely because of proximity and the sentiment attached to them are Mt. Yamnuska and Castle Mtn.
I am the current ACC Calgary Section webmaster (since 2004).

It was at the age of seven that I was brought on my first roped climb by my dad in southern Bavaria. It seems like such a small hill today, but it was the start of a great passion for the mountains and outdoors in general.
I joined the ACC back in 1985, when I first moved out to Calgary and have been enjoying the weekends in the Rockies ever since. My passion is for bigger peaks in the Rockies, but also the quick one day'er scramble excercise outings.
Back in the 80's and early 90's I was a keener on ice, but after discovering the enjoyment of backcountry skiing, I now rarely get on vertical ice, unless it is on a summer climb.
Since I live in Europe for almost half the year, I enjoy outings to the Swiss and Austrian Alps and should anyone in the club have a desire to venture over there, I welcome a call from you, perhaps we can even hook up for a climb. I love the Zermatt area and have gone with two of my ACC frieds in the past on a 9 day randonee of the 4,000 Meter peaks around Zermatt. This summer I trekked from Bavaria to Italy via the ranges of Austria and had the chance to climb some lovely peaks en route.
I have organized an expedition to Denali, where we cimbed the peak via a sporting route, but never really got used to sleeping out in the cold for the 23 days we were up there. Also I have twice ventured to Nepal as well as Tibet for some high alt. climbing and also trekking. I just love Nepal and could see spending one month per year there in coming years.
Currently I am part of the T & L committee and enjoy coming up with new workshops and courss for our membership. As I am also a pilot, I am a keener on weather patterns and prediction and enjoy navigation. Since I do not wish to fully rely on the power of batteries, I am a bit of an old fashioned compass, map and altimeter navigator and like to take my wands up on the icefields.

I am
currently working towards applying for the Ski Guide Training and
Assistant Ski Guide exam at the end of this winter. I currently hold 3
years of experience ski touring as well as my 80hr Wilderness First
Responder ticket and have worked as a bike patrol with Panorama
Mountain Village. I am currently headed down to Whistler to obtain my
CAA level 1 Certification as well as do a variation of the
Spearhead/Mcbride Traverse ( this variation allows ski tourers to bag
a possible 17 peaks in 3-4 days) To date my ski touring resume
consists of experience consisting of multiple tours in Kananaskis,
Rockies, Wapta icefields, Monashee's, Valhalla's, Coast Ranges, and
Experience in the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps. I also have
climbing experience consisting of trips all around BC and Alberta and
down to New Zealand as well. I am well practiced in Multiple crevasse
rescue systems and am taking my Level 3 CSIA ski instructors course
this winter.

I have a variety of mountaineering experience and purposely try and stay well rounded by mixing in some rock/ice climbing (middle of the road stuff) to compliment the skills required for various Alpine trips (which is my true passion). I also enjoy ski mountaineering/touring and various scrambles during the shoulder seasons. Some of the most difficult Alpine trips that I've completed to-date include bagging all 5 of the Lyells in 2 days and also climbing the east ridge of Assiniboine during difficult winter conditions. Some of the more difficult trips I've led include the Silverhorn route on Athabasca (twice) and also South Victoria exiting via the Huber Glacier/Ledges.
With my family, I love to get out and camp/canoe and generally just be in the mountains every chance I get.
